Midtown Farm and its Restoration
The farmhouse and barns were originally a working dairy farm, which fell
into a sad state of disrepair. In 2003 we took on the enormous
project of restoring the farm buildings and
began with a complete renovation of the farmhouse itself. It
is a Grade 2 listed traditional Westmorland longhouse, and we
have tried very hard to retain the character and many original
features of the building without sacrificing the comforts of
modern living.
You can see from the photos below what an enormous task the
farmhouse renovation was. Original features such as the stone
pantry and the oak shutters in the lounge had to be removed
whilst all the work was
carried out. There were times when it seemed the house would
never be habitable again, especially when the mini digger arrived
to dig up the
floors and drove right into the living room! One large beam
in the living room took 4 men to lift it into place and the moment
when we discovered
the crack in the stone lintel of the fireplace should never
be repeated!
With the farmhouse restored we started to work on creating
a whole new unit in the barn, which would make the most of
the views out
to the Pennines. We had to use a crane to replace the roof
but the new oak beams are now on display in the vaulted ceiling
of the lounge. The final, and largest, property, The Dairy,
is almost complete and will be finished by the end of May 2008.
